I am a bit confused about the actual meaning of Timeout & Delay between checks.
Is it possible to explain their meaning with an example
Also is it possible to apply maintenance period to selected services only?

Timeout is the maximum time we will wait for a connection or response from your website. If your website takes longer than this time to respond, then a "timeout error" is generated.
Delay between checks is only used during an outage. During an outage, the system will check your website from multiple monitoring stations in sequential order, and you can make a short delay between the checks from each monitoring station.
Example: Suppose you specified 30 sec timeout, and check from 2 monitoring stations with 20 sec delay between checks. This is what happens when your website becomes unresponsive:- Monitoring station A checks your website, waits for 30 sec (timeout) and does not receive any response (a "timeout error").
- The system requires monitoring station B to confirm the downtime. Before monitoring station B starts checking, we will wait for 20 sec (delay between checks).
- Now, monitoring station B checks your website again, and does not receive a response in 30 sec (timeout) too (a "timeout error"). The downtime is confirmed, and alerts are sent to you.
- In summary: <Monitoring station A - 30 sec timeout> ... <20 sec delay> ... <Monitoring station B - 30 sec timeout>

Yes, when you add a maintenance you can specify which services it applies to. |
