Do you have an exact description of how the Connect Time is measured. (?)

And my second question: what are likely root causes if the measured Conntect Time is high. In other words; are there any suggestions to the site adminitstrator to get this number down? It also fluctuates quite a bit.

Regards,

Marco

Dear Marco,

"Connect Time" refers to the time we initiate a TCP connection request to the time the connection is established.

By default, we check your website from multiple locations in the world (you can set your monitoring profile to check from a specific location though). If you use the default settings, the "Connect Time" is the average reading from all of our locations. Some of our locations may be in another continent from where your website is hosted, and this will affect (increase) the reading.

You should not compare our "Connect Time" with those reported by another tool/website. You should only compare the "Connect Time" value between different websites you are monitoring with us.

Without seeing your report, we cannot give more detailed advice. Unless you wish to post your graph/settings/details here, we suggest that you open a ticket and discuss with us in private.

Thank you.

Choonkeng,

Thank you for answereing.

So I assume this includes the additional handshake messages that is used on an https connection.

Do you know, from your own experience, what the additional relative cost is on connection time using HTTPS over HTTP?

Are there other factors (excecpt network hops) that influence this connection time ?

Yes, if you use https then connect time includes SSL handshake.

Sorry, we do not have data on relative cost of HTTPS over HTTP.

SSL handshake incurs a few additional TCP/IP round-trips, so network latency should make up for most of connect time. There is an interesting discussion at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/149274/http-vs-https-performance .
