If you are a small to medium sized webhost and own your servers, I would suggest in investing in some type of software, that restarts your services when they go down. There are many good software products out there, that does just that. A search on Google or Yahoo should bring you some good results. :.)

Yes, I agree that people should use this type of script as the last line of defence. At least, we do.

Unfortunately, even the quickest service restart or system reboot will cause a small amount of downtime. The best solution is still to find out the exact cause of downtimes and solve the root problems.

You may want to use ready-made scripts such as SIM - http://rfxnetworks.com/sim.php instead.
