I need to monitor an Openvpn server with a dynamic ip address. The connection is relayed from Dyndns servers.

If I test using ping mydyndns.com it always returns true because Dyndns's server is responding to the ping request.

If I try to ping the specific port mydyndns.com:<port> it always returns false.

Need some help setting this up, if it's possible.

Thanks,
-jm

Hello,

We are not very familiar with DynDNS but our understanding of such a service is that you get an A record (eg. yourname.mydyndns.com) that points to your dynamic IP address.

From what you said, it appears that you are using mydyndns.com's main domain and not your specific A record. Why is it so? Can you explain more on how you use DynDNS?

Thank you.

I was just posting an example. I am using a variation of yourname.mydyndns.com.
When our sitename is requested Dyndns forwards the request to our server. The servers ip address of our server is updated frequently so that Dydns knows where to redirect.

Hope that makes things clearer.

Thank you for the PM.

Your hostname xxxx.selfip.com resolves to your IP address and therefore sends all requests to your server.

It is your server responding to ping, not Dyndns. We sent you a PM with ping results and you can see the the response comes from your ISP. If ping always return true, then your IP is probably a router/gateway that is always UP?

The reason you cannot ping xxxx.selfip.com:<port> is because ping only works on a hostname. You cannot ping a specific port. To know if a port is UP, you may use our TCP port test for this purpose. Again, we have included a quick test link in the PM response so you can see what are the settings to use.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
